This 4-week course will explore the assumptions and principles of a trauma-informed approach in organizations that provide behavioral health and co-occurring services to individuals and families. It will also examine the need for the entire organization (including administrators, support staff, clinicians and clinical supervisors) to incorporate a comprehensive understanding of the prevalence and impact of trauma on the consumers of mental health and addiction services, the role that trauma plays in the development of mental health and substance use issues, and the complexity and diversity of ways people recover and heal from trauma. Emphasis will be placed on workforce development, screening and assessment, general treatment considerations, evidence-informed/evidence-based trauma specific interventions and cultural competencies.
